A close friend recommended that we visit the Hérault to appreciate the landscape where he lives, and he was right; fate led us to Judith Rothchild's door and in a more concrete way, the mezzotint. As the artist said “I work to find the light in the depths of the velvety surface of the plate, drawing directly on the copper from the subject without preparatory sketches. The work is made in successive stages and the plate keeps the memory of every movement of the hand." Really magnificent work, velvety, sensitive and vibrant, a delicate touch from the end of those fingers which also master the art of drawing and pastel. The artist works exclusively from life, thus making the natural world more visible. Judith Rothchild was born in Boston in 1950. She graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design before studying at the Akademie für Angewandte Kunst, in Vienna (Austria). « Drawing is the center of my life. When I look and draw, I feel in harmony with the world. With a pastel, a pencil or a burnisher in my hand, I understand better my surroundings, " she says. She also participates in the creation of artist's books combining mezzotint and letterpress which are published by Editions Verdigris. She has been living and working in the South of France since 1974, in Octon a small village near Lake Salagou. She shows her work in France and abroad, participates in collective events and personal exhibitions. Her work is present in important private collections and in famous international institutions (National Library of France, New York Public Library, Victoria and Albert Museum, London, etc.). We are happy to introduce her to those who do not know her, because we know that you will appreciate her talent.
