Notes of biography

Manolo is the pseudonym chosen by Manuel Hugué and Martinez. This future sculptor, painter, printmaker, draftsman, is born in Barcelona (Spain) in 1872 and dies in 1945 in Catalonia (lighters). Raised by his sister in Barcelona, Manolo quickly emancipates from the tutelage to lead a life of adventure. He is a student at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona for 3 years and soon realizes few decorative arts projects.
He is twenty years old when, deserter, he makes his first trip to Paris in 1892. He settles there for ten years at the beginning of the century (1901-1909). There he becomes friends with Picasso, the sculptor ceramist Francisco Durrio, and the artists of Montmartre and Montparnasse. He is regularly at this period of time the night companion of poet Jean Moréas. Unable to earn his living, he moves to Ceret (Pyrenees-Orientales).

In 1910. In 1912 and 1913, for long stays, Braque, Picasso and Juan Gris come join him. Manolo contracts a severe illness at the end of the Great War; he must abandon sculpture to devote himself to painting, especially watercolor. In the mid-20s, he leaves Ceret and settles back into his country of origin, Caldes de Montbui (Spain).
Having participated in several group exhibitions, his work is also shown in solo exhibitions, mainly in Barcelona and Paris, but also in New York, the latter having been organized at the Museum Tavet-Delacour (Pontoise, 1995). Manolo often sculpts, models maternity or small figures impressions of primitivism. He illustrates Reverdy and realizes a few monumental sculptures (you can still see "The Catalan" on one of the places in Ceret).

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
