Stamp by Godwin Hoffmann
fictional stamp
The publication of a postal stamp is often a homage paid by a nation to a place, an event, a remarkable cause or a character which count. The painters and other artists do not escape from this rule. Some are however "forgotten" of postal art. Here, gathered below (French or foreign), emitted stamps (206) or simple studies of stamp (224) in homage to the artists represented on our website. The first French stamp was emitted in 1849, England preceded us by ten years. There is often a share of voyage in this small form of shape paper. The stamp circulates, sails, flies away, it makes dream, then dream a little. M.C.
When the stamp is really emitted, the artist name is preceded of an asterisk (*).
It is certain that we do not know each stamp emitted for such or such artist; do not hesitate with us to make known them!

Godwin Hoffmann is born in Büchenbeuren (Germany) in 1945. He is of Anglo-Saxon and Dutch ascent, son of a Pasteur, graduate of Kunstakademie of Düsseldorf; he settles in France in 1973 and is a professor of art between 1971 and 1999. Very young, he admires the Dutch Masters of the XVII° century, Vincent Van Gohg; very early, he visits museums where he discovers Picasso, Braque or Kandinsky, and so many others who stimulate his thoughts. The young man launches out, consequently and with a rigorous discipline, into a keen work.
Godwin Hoffmann lives and works today in France, in Neuwiller-lès-Saverne, small Alsatian village near Saverne. This area decrees him its price of painting in 1994. In his painted work as well as in his graphic work, Godwin Hoffmann works with strict rules of composition, with a rigour which excludes only seldom the marks of the pictorial gesture. In the field of the work printed on paper, mainly per series, the artist creates aquatint works, screenprints, works sometimes made up for artist books.
There is in his artistic evolution, since the end of the Sixties - period of the studies - a great coherence in the evolution of his creative expression. In 1983, he creates a painted concrete work, in the end of the nineties he carries out the object-canvases in isorel and, year 2000 he paints on plexiglass, looking for transparency. Amateur of jazz - he his himself a player of saxophone -, Godwin Hoffmann is a painter,a sculptor, etcher, he also expresses himself by the watercolour, the charcoal, the pencil, he is a multidisciplinary artist.
Mr. Cordonnier-Kraft writes in his artist -painted-work-catalogue-raisonné- foreword: “what is fundamental with this work: intensive work, importance of the structure, the refusal of the illusionism, the search of the perfection and of the absolute”. Godwin Hoffmann took part in the previous years in many collective exhibitions and personnal ones. Numerous retrospectives are devoted to his work.
Artists on display
The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.
Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.
We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
