Chu Teh-Chun was born in 1920 in Jiangsu province, China. Youngest son of a well-to-do family, his father was a collector of traditional Chinese painting. He was admitted in 1935 to the Art Academy of Hangzhou. He was first interested in the traditional style, then he opted for western painting. In 1937, the Chinese-Japanese war provoked the exodus of the universities towards the west of China. Chu Teh-Chun obtained his diploma in 1941; he is immediately named assistant professor in his own school, then permanent professor in 1942 at the University of Nankin. He travels, discovers the Chinese countryside that are sources of inspiration (the decent of Yangzejiang).

After the second world war, he moves to Taipei. In 1951 he is professor of the National University , where he teaches western painting. In 1955, after perfecting his art culture, he moves to Paris after a trip where he discovers other countries and other landscapes - notably Egypt. He paints Parisian scenery, works the Grand Chaumiere galley where he meets other painters, and will travel to other countries. He is fascinated with the retrospective of Nicolas de Staël who introduces him to abstract art.

His first solo exhibition takes place in Paris in 1957. He frequents the artists of the School of Paris: Soulages, Hartung and Marthieu. He becomes successful and is his art is known abroad thanks to a few collective exhibitions which he participates in (Pittsburg, Jerusalem, Athens, San Paulo).

The artist seems to open a new chapter in the area of landscape art, landscapes that are mixed with subtle poetry. Virtuous, inspired by calligraphy, signs and the mood of the Orient, he makes important graphic works, drawing, ceramics, large scale paintings, diptychs, triptychs, monumental works, always inventing a personal writing style between poetry and painting. In 1987, the National Museum of Taipei organized a grand retrospective of his work, this would be his first time back to his native country. In 1997, he is elected to the Academy of Fine Arts of the Institute of Paris. For ‘The Year of China in France’ in 2004 no less than four exhibitions are organized to celebrate him.
