Notes of biography

Bertrand Dorny is born in Paris in 1931. He is painter at his beginning, but curious about various techniques of creation. Quickly, he is initiated with engraving. The mechanical side of engraving seduces him, as well as the concept of transfer. Engraving becomes thus, with the passing of time, the base of his future research.
His engraved works represent today more than 650 prints and since the middle of the Fifties the artist has exposed in a multitude of exhibitions in France and abroad (Luxembourg, Belgium, Switzerland, United States, Germany, Great Britain, etc). In the same way, Bertrand Dorny takes part regularity in a very great number of collective manifestations, Salons (New Realities, Young Contemporary Engraving, The artist engravers, etc) and biennial (in particular the Biennial of Cracow, Epinal or Freschen), and his work is often awarded there. Among the galleries and editors who play a determining role in the career of the artist, stand out Bernard Gheerbrand (La Hune), New Engraving or Nesto Jacometti (Locarno).
Dorny is particularly attracted to poor materials (paperboard, floated wood, worn papers); he realizes from these materials collages, folded papers, wood-reliefs (“topomorphes”) and assembles very large floated wood panels.
Dorny works in the workshop of the painter André Lhote, then, later, engraves with Johnny Friedlaender. After having been professor of drawing at the Academy of the “Grande Chaumière”, Bertrand Dorny teaches engraving, between 1975 and 1979, at the School of the Fine Art in Paris.

Bertrand Dorny is one of the most prolific Masters in the book of contemporary artist, or book collage. The words of many poets (Charles Juliet, Michel Butor, Bernard Noël, Michel Deguy, Yves Peyré, Marc Le Bot, among others) collaborate with his works and an exhibition of fifty of their work is organized at the B.N.F. (La Bibliothèque Nationale de France, Paris - French National Library in Paris) in 1992.
The prints of Dorny are made of a mixture of intimate cartography and interior music, of much joy and clearness, mysteries of the heart where balances the closeness and the distance, the calmness and signs of deep questionings. Clearness and light on the sheet truly carved by the artist!

Bertrand Dorny ceases his activity as an engraver in 1991. The artist continues, since this date, the realization of collages - by sets of themes - and carries out many books in close cooperation with contemporary writers and poets. “I did not surprise myself any more. I believe that art must continuously move, tells the artist. An artist must know to endanger himself, it is beneficial for creation. Then I move towards collages and books”.
Bertrand Dorny died in June, 2015, he was 84 years old.

Artists on display

The art and the artists display: proclamations, galleries, museums, personal or collective exhibitions. On walls or in shop windows, wise or rebels, posters warn, argue, show. Some were specially conceived by an artist for such or such event, other, colder, have only the letter.

Some were created in lithographic technic, most are simple offset reproductions. They are many those who like collecting these rectangles of paper, monochrome or in games of colours, in matt paper or brilliant, with many words or almost dumb.

We are happy also to be able to greet, by this pages, mythical galleries as those of Denise René, Louis Carré, Claude Bernard, Berheim Jeune, Maeght, Pierre Loeb and others.
