    Le poète Max Jacob, que le peintre débutant rencontra en 1941, fut le premier à découvrir les dispositions de Jacques Doucet et à l’encourager à s’engager totalement dans la peinture. Doucet appartient à cette pléiade d’artistes qui devinrent célèbres et se manifestèrent après la libération (Bazaine, Ubac, etc.). Après une première exposition chez Mme Allendy à Passy, l’artiste fit parti du groupe « Cobra » qui réunissait surtout des peintres hollandais et belges, comme Corneille ou Appel. Chacun ira vers un monde qui lui est propre. Jacques Doucet est un peintre-poète, un quasi-autodidacte. L’artiste, au long de sa carrière artistique, réalisera quelques œuvres imprimées sur papier originales (ou estampes), lithographies et gravures, œuvres isolées ou réalisées dans le cadre du livre illustré ; en ce dernier domaine, on relève notamment des eaux-fortes de Jacques Doucet pour « En soit le chaos » de Jean Orizet (1975), ami et spécialiste de l’artiste, et pour « Au frontière du silence » de Claude Couffon (1980).
