Born in Ostende in 1860, James Ensor barely leaves his hometown. He is a member of early XXth century vanguard movements and realizes expressionist works. In 1877, he registers at the Fine Arts Academy in Brussels. He is introduced to the artistic and intellectual scene. Quickly, Ensor fights against academicism. He decides to go back leaving with his mother and will stay with her until 1917. As a determined bachelor, Ensor sets up his atelier in a family home room and starts painting realistic portraits or landscapes inspired by impressionism. Right then he writes "my fellowcitizen with mollusk-like protuberance devastate me...". At the begining of the XXth century, Ensor's original work is recognized. To him, this recognition arrives too late and Ensor gives up painting, devoting the last years of his life to music. James Ensor dies in 1949 in Ostende.
