    La première gravure en couleurs de Stanley William Hayter apparaît en 1943, ce sera « Centauresse » (n° 157 du C.R.) publié par Curt Valentin, New York. La seconde, la célèbre « Cinq personnages », le sera trois ans plus tard, première grande planche en plusieurs couleurs imprimées en un seul passage selon la technique mise au point par l’artiste. De figuratif dans les années 20, l’artiste va travailler dans la droite ligne du surréalisme dès le début des années 30. C’est Hayter qui sera à l’origine du célèbre ouvrage « Solidarité » (1938) qui sur un poème d’Eluard réunissait des gravures originales de Picasso, Miro, Tanguy et autres, livre dont la vente sera faite pour venir en aide aux Républicains espagnols (Ed. GLM). L’ultime gravure de l’artiste est datée 1987. Hayter aura beaucoup écrit sur le sujet de la gravure, des livres qui font référence en la matière.
