Biography of Alfred Sisley
The impressionist painter Alfred Sysley was born in 1839 in Paris to British parents. He studied in France, then he was sent to London to study for a career in business, his father's wishes. He was not interested in this and he decided to dedicate himself to drawing and painting. In 1860, he studied at the atelier of Swiss artist Charles- Gabriel Gleyre, where he became acquainted with Renoir, Monet and Frédéric Bazille. Monet drove his friends to the edge of the forest in Fontainebleau, in Chailly, Louveciennes and Bougival; there, Sysley found inspiration for his first landscapes. Even if some paintings were showed in several salons, the artist encountered little interest. After his father died and the ensuing material ruin, his life became a long struggle against adversity and necessity. Although he was closely involved in the story of impressionism, sharing same conceptions with his friends and same attacks by critics, unfortunately he never obtained the same audience and fame. Deeply affected by the little interest which concerned him, Sysley became hard, irritable and shadowy. But the hunger of painting, the delight to work were still present.
Only dead, he was recognized and found the success which has been denied to him during his life. Alfred Sysley artwork is specific within the impressionist movement ; he was the painter of imponderables and all his art is « suggested », with a great delicate touch, full of poetry. Alfred Sysley died in 1899 in his home in Moret-sur-Loing.

A tribute to Alfred Sisley

« Je suis rompu par la douleur... Je n’ai plus l’énergie de combattre... ». Il fait appeler Monet lui recommande ses enfants et lui dit adieu. Alfred Sisley décède le 29 janvier 1899 dans sa maison à Moret-sur-Loing et est enterré au cimetière de Moret, le 1er février, par un temps gris et froid. Renoir, Monet et Adolphe Tavernier sont venus de Paris. En 1900, un an après seulement sa mort lors de la vente Adolphe Tavernier, le comte Isaac de Camondo achète « L'inondation à Marly » pour la somme considérable à l’époque de 43000 francs, vendue par l’artiste à l’origine 180 francs. En 1911 il est le premier artiste impressionniste à recevoir l’hommage d’un monument commémoratif dans sa ville de Moret. Il repose auprès de son épouse. Sur sa tombe cette épitaphe : « Il faut que les objets soient enveloppés de lumière, comme ils le sont dans la nature. A.S. ». En son hommage, cet iris des marais.
